Ian Stewart MBE - Athletics

Born 1949, Inducted in 2002

Stewart was born in England, but represented Scotland as his father was born in Musselburgh.

He won a bronze medal for the 5,000m at the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972. He also ran to victory in the 5,000m final of the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970. He set a new European record of 13 minutes, 22.8 seconds. The silver medal in the race also went to a Scotsman, Ian McCafferty. This left the Kenyan legend and race favourite, Kip Keino, in third place.

Within the space of eight days in 1975 Stewart won the European indoor 3,000m title, and then the World Cross Country title, making him the last Briton to have won that event.
