Rugby 7s
Sevens rugby is a variant of rugby union in which only seven players per side participate in the match. It is a fast, open, exciting game, which highlights all the skills involved in the game of rugby. Sevens is sanctioned by the IRB and is played under substantially the same rules, and on a field of the same dimensions as the 15-player game.
Rugby sevens is one of ten cores at the Commonwealth Games and made its debut in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, but Manchester in 2002 was the first occasion Scotland entered a team. In 2009 rugby sevens was approved by the IOC as an Olympic Sport and will make its debut in 2016 with Scotland participating as part of Team GB.
The rugby sevens competition will be held in accordance with the rules of the IRB and will follow a format similar to that of all rugby sevens World Series events - www.irb.com
Rugby sevens will feature on the sports programme for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Scotland will accept the host nation place for Rugby 7s with the performance target of top eight in the Commonwealth.
