Judo

Judo

Judo is an optional sport on the Commonwealth Games programme for both men and women and has only been included in the Games twice.

It was a demonstration sport in Edinburgh in 1986 and then appeared for the first time officially in Auckland in 1990 then again in Manchester in 2002.

Scotland has a strong tradition in this noble art, with eight medals (1 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze) being won by the eleven-strong judo squad in 1990. This remarkable achievement was then topped in Manchester in 2002 when judo won 10 medals (1 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze) including a memorable gold by Graeme Randall, making Judo Scotland’s most successful sport of the Games.

Judo makes a welcome return to the sports programme in Glasgow 2014.

The Judo competition is run according to the rules of the International Judo Federation (IJF) -  www.ijf.org
