Michael Cavanagh

Michael Cavanagh, Chairman

Michael was re-elected Chairman in May 2011. He first joined the Board in 2003. Michael is a former Scottish team member. Having first wrestled for Scotland in 1979, Michael wrestled at the 1982 Commonwealth Games, was Wrestling Coach at the 1994 Games and Wrestling Team Manager in 2002. In 2006 Michael was Assistant General Team Manager with responsibility for the Village and Athlete Liaison. Michael has managed British Teams at World Wrestling Championships and other international events.

In his professional capacity Michael is Manager of the East of Scotland Institute of Sport, He is a former President of the Scottish Wrestling Association, a former director of the British Wrestling Association Ltd and was the 2004 Olympic Team Manager for Wrestling. Michael represents CGS on the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee Board.

Dr Fiona McEwan

Dr Fiona McEwan, Vice-Chairman

Fiona was re-elected to the post of Vice Chairman in May 2011. She has served four terms as a Board member joining the Games Council as an Executive member in 1995. Fiona was Badminton Team Manager in 1994 in Victoria and again at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games, Village Manager at the 2000 Millennium Youth Games and Assistant General Team Manager with Village responsibilities in 2002. In 2006 she was amongst the Scottish Centre staff in Melbourne leading on the "Adopt a Second Team" programme.

A past President and former Board member of Badminton Scotland, Fiona was Team Manager at numerous Badminton World, European and Thomas & Uber Cup Championships.

Louise Martin

Louise Martin CBE, Immediate Past Chairman

Louise was first elected to Commonwealth Games Scotland in 1995 and served two terms as Chairman, the first woman ever to hold this post. She is now in her second term as Immediate Past Chairman. She is also currently the Commonwealth Games Federation Honorary Secretary, being re-elected unopposed for a third term in November 2007.

Involved in the Games both as a competitor and an administrator, Louise competed in the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia where she made the swimming finals in 100m and 200m backstroke. She has also represented Scottish Gymnastics on the Commonwealth Games Scotland Board and was Gymnastics Team Manager at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada, and Deputy General Team Manager in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia in 1998.

In the 2003 New Year's Honours List she was awarded a CBE for services to Commonwealth Games. Louise successfully led Scotland's bid to bring the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Glasgow and in recognition of her contribution to Scottish sport was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from University of Abertay.

In May 2008, Louise was appointed as Chairman of the national sports agency, sportscotland . She sits on the Boards of UK Sport, the Scottish Sports Aid Foundation and the Commonwealth Sports Awards Foundation. She represents CGS on the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee Board where she holds the position of Vice-Chair.

Maureen Campbell

Maureen Campbell, Director (4 year term)

Maureen is serving her second term as a Board Member having first been elected in 2007. She is a former swimmer, representing Scotland at the 1978 Commonwealth Games and has been Chair of Scottish Swimming since 2006.

In her professional role Maureen is Director of Community Services with Falkirk Council and has strong skills in governance, as well as extensive experience of the management and delivery of complex projects and partnerships involving both capital projects and people development programmes.

Jackie Davidson

Jackie Davidson, Director (2 year term)

Jackie was first elected to the Board in November 2007 and is now serving her second term. From 2008-2011 she was Chair of the Marketing & Communications Committee. In May 2011 she joined Scottish Golf as Clubgolf Manager and prior to this she was Chief Executive of Scottish Cycling. She is a former President of Triathlonscotland and attended the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in this capacity.

Leslie Roy

Leslie Roy, Director (2 year term)

Passionate about sport and athletics in particular, having started competing in middle distance events at the age of 12, Leslie has been involved in Commonwealth Games since 2000. She brings a wealth of experience from her role as Athletics Team Manager in 2002 and 2006. For the Commonwealth Youth Games of 2000, 2004 and 2008 she was part of the General Team Management. In Delhi 2010, Leslie was an Assistant General Team Manager organising all transport and logistics for Team Scotland.

In October 2011, Leslie was appointed as President of Scottish Athletics.

Niall Sturrock

Niall Sturrock, Director (4 year term)

Niall was elected to the Board in May 2011. He trained as a PE teacher and has been involved in Higher Education for over 30 years, the last eight as Head of Sport and Recreation at the University of Strathclyde. In this role he has been heavily involved in Scottish Universities Sport as wellas being elected to the Advisory Board of Winning Students. He was elected to the University Court in 2009.

As a volunteer Niall has served on committees for Scottish Hockey for over 30 years as well as holding posts of national coach for both men's and women's teams. He was a member of the FIH (World Hockey) Development and Coaching Committee for over 17 years, the last six as secretary. More recently he was appointed Chair of the Hockey Technical Committee for FISU (World Universities Sports Federation).

Paul Bush

Paul Bush OBE, Director (4 year term)

Chief Operating Officer for Event Scotland, Paul has led the development of Scotland as one of the world’s leading events destinations, delivering Scotland’s Major Events Strategy. Prior to that Paul was the Chief Executive of Scottish Swimming which amongst other achievements he led the planning and establishment of the National Swimming Academy.

At previous Commonwealth Games, Paul has held the voluntary positions of General Team Manager (2002) and Chef de Mission (2006). At the Delhi 2010 Games, he was Director of Scotland House.

From 1990 until 1996, he was British Swimming Team Manager, including the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. In the 2007 New Year Honours List, he was awarded the OBE for services to sport.

Paul is also a member of the Glasgow 2014 Audit and Risk Committee.

Jane Gotts, Director - Marketing and Communications (4 year term)

International Director of Scottish Council for Development and Industry as well as Programme Director of BusinessClub Scotland, Jane brings a wealth of experience in marketing, communicating and business in Scotland and throughout the Commonwealth. Jane has overall responsibility for the strategic direction of SCDI’s International Programme where her work included leading the largest delegation from Scotland to India during the Delhi 2010 Games.

A focus of her work is to engage businesses through major events such as Glasgow 2014. She is also involved in the Government led Games Legacy working groups.

Peter Nicolson

Peter Nicolson, Director - Finance (4 year term)

Peter is serving his second term as a Board Member having first been elected in 1999. He has been appointed to the new position of Diector of Finance. From 2008-2011 Peter held the role of Honorary Treasurer and was Chair of the Marketing & Communications Committee 2003-2008. A member of the 2000 Commonwealth Youth Games Organising Committee he also directed the tennis competition. He managed the Scottish Centre at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and was responsible for Caledonian Society liaison in Melbourne 2006. He has been a member of the Team Scotland selection committee since 2001. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Peter was the Tennis Team Leader for Team Scotland.

A previous President and Board member of Tennis Scotland, Peter still chairs the Scottish Tennis Championships, Scotland's premier international tennis event, and referees several other regional tennis tournaments. Professionally Peter uses his actuarial/IT experience to provide Change Management services within the Financial Services sector.

Professor Leigh Robinson, Director - Corporate Governance & Compliance (4 year term)

An international expert in sport governance and management, Leigh took up her post as the Chair in Sports Management to the School of Sport at the University of Stirling in September 2010, where her principal research is on organisational performance, investigating principles of management that make sport more effective. Since 2004, she has been an adviser to the Olympic Solidarity Commission of the IOC on their global Sports Administration programmes.

Leigh is editor of Managing Olympic Sports Organisations and is on the editorial Board of the European Sports Management Quarterly and Sports Management Review.

Susan Jackson

Susan Jackson, Athletes’ Representative (4 year term)

Susan represented Scotland in small bore rifle shooting at three Commonwealth Games, medalling at each Games winning: bronze in 1998; silver in 2002; and, gold in 2006.

Susan was part of the Achieve 2014 programme at the Delhi 2010 Games acting as an athlete mentor, allowing her to share her experiences with aspiring athletes and coaches.

She has held a number of voluntary positions within her sport over the last 20 years.

In her professional life, Susan is a Senior Director of the Winning Scotland Foundation, instrumental in the development and growth of one of its programmes, Champions in Schools. This is an athlete role model programme which will be delivered to over 100 schools through an athlete pool of 70 high performance athletes.

She is a Chartered Accountant, having worked in the Corporate Finance Team for Deloittes for 12 years.

Joan Watt

Joan Watt, Honorary Medical Adviser (4 year term)

Joan Watt has been appointed as Honorary Medical Adviser for a third term. A chartered physiotherapist Joan was first elected to the Commonwealth Games Scotland Board in 2003. In addition, Joan has contributed to Scottish Commonwealth Games teams in her role as physiotherapist at each Games since 1982 and was Senior Physiotherapist in 1994 and Joint Head Physiotherapist in 1998. In 2006 and 2010 Joan was the Shooting Team Leader.

Joan has also served as lead physiotherapist at Olympic Games, World and European Championships for athletics and shooting amongst other sports. Instrumental in establishing the British Sports Massage Association, Joan is a former Chairperson of Scottish Athletics.

Stewart Harris

Stewart Harris, Board Observer

sportscotland the national agency for sport will also continue to be represented by Chief Executive, Stewart Harris as an observer to the Board. This has been the practice for a number of Games cycles and is common practice for the partners it supports.

Stewart has been an observer since 2007.
