About Team Scotland

Every four years Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) selects and enters a team to represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth Games is the only occasion where Scotland gets to compete in a multi-sport event as a nation in its own right, and this is one of the factors that contributes to the strong team spirit which has become a trademark of Team Scotland.

Scotland is one of only six countries to have competed at every Commonwealth Games since their inception in 1930.

Scottish Commonwealth Games champions include boxer Dick McTaggart, swimmer David Wilkie, sprinter Allan Wells, distance runner Liz McColgan, shooter Alister Allan and cyclist Chris Hoy - all of whom have won Olympic medals. Multiple diving gold medallist Sir Peter Heatly contributed even further by managing Scottish teams and later chairing the Commonwealth Games Federation. In 2009 Sir Peter was made Patron of Commonwealth Games Scotland.

Since 1998, CGS has set rigorous selection standards, which have significantly contributed to raising the standard of performance of the team. Sport specific Selection Policies are set in conjunction with each sport and can be found in the relevant Games section of the website.

Most Commonwealth Games sports and athletes have also benefited from Lottery funding through sportscotland and/or high performance support services provided by the sportscotland Institute of Sport.

Individual athlete preparation is the responsibility of each athlete, their coach and the Scottish sport governing body. The role of CGS is to prepare all 17 sports to come together to compete as one team - Team Scotland.

Over recent years Team Scotland has had the support of a range of excellent commercial partners including Clydesdale Bank, Emirates and the Leadership Trust. sportscotland the national agency for sport is also a major supporter.

For the period from 2011 leading up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, we have entered into a joint marketing agreement with the Games Organising Committee whereby the commercial sponsors of the Glasgow 2014 will become sponsors of CGS and Team Scotland.

Since 2009 the Scottish team has been known as Team Scotland - 17 Sports, One Team.
