Competition Format

The Commonwealth Games table tennis competition in Delhi 2010 included singles (men and women), doubles (men, women and mixed) and a team event. There was also a Para-Sport competition for Women Wheelchair – Open TT1-5.

There were a total of eight gold medals contested in table tennis.  

Team Event 

Team events for men and women will be played under the new Swaythling Cup system with a team consisting of three players. A maximum of five individual matches will be played in each team as follows: 

A v X
B v Y
C v Z
A v Y
B v X 

Each individual team match will be the best of five games. The team match will end when one team has won three individual matches. The competition will be conducted with qualifying groups of four or five teams with two teams progressing to the main second stage draw which will be played on a progressive knock out basis. All other teams will progress to play classification matches to produce a final ranking. 

Singles Event 

The singles events will be played as a round robin to knock out (subject to the number of entries) as follows:
 
Men’s and Women’s Singles
Athletes will be divided into groups of three or four (one player from each group progresses) plus 16 seeds into the knock out phase to a round of 64 knock out. In the qualifying groups matches will be the best of seven unless the size of entry means that this has to be changed to best of five games.
 
Women’s Wheelchair Singles
Athletes will be divided into pools for a single round robin qualifying phase with a maximum of five athletes in each pool. The actual number of pools and athletes in each pool will be determined and communicated following the close of final individual entries.
 
The top two athletes in each pool following the completion of the qualifying phase will qualify and progress to the knock out phase. 
 
Doubles Event 
Men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles will be played on a straight knock out basis. All matches will be the best of five games.
