The Competition Area

An 80 to 110cm-high podium is required for artistic gymnastics events. The apparatus are placed on this podium and stabilised on the suitable sockets, in specific distances between them and with a safety margin from the end of the podium, in accordance with the Technical Regulations of FIG.

Judging

Evaluation in artistic gymnastics follows the rules of the FIG. An Apparatus Jury judges each piece of apparatus. This jury consists of two groups being the A and B Juries.

The A Jury evaluates the ‘start value’ which is open ended, based on the content, the degree of difficulty, the special requirements and the bonus points of exercise he or she has performed.

The B Jury, determines deductions according to the execution of the exercise and is marked out of 10.00.

The two scores are then added together to form the total for each apparatus.

Scoring

  • All exercises are given a maximum score by the FIG and separated into categories according to their degree of difficulty.
  • Athletes must include exercises from all categories in order to achieve the highest possible score.
  • The gymnasts’ score is reduced by mistakes, such as lack of rhythm, flexibility, stability or technical errors.
  • The highest and lowest mark is discarded; an average is formed from the rest.
  • An element that is presented for the first time in a major competition is named after the athlete who introduces it.
