Overview & History
In 2004 Commonwealth Games Scotland initiated the Scottish bid for the 2014 Games in order to bring a long term legacy for Scottish sport. Glasgow was selected as the preferred candidate city and with the backing of the Scottish Government, the bid was formally launched in August 2005 and a professional bid team was appointed. Following a competitive bid process against Halifax, Canada (who later withdrew) and Abuja, Nigeria, Scotland was awarded the 20th Commonwealth Games on 9 November 2007 by 47 votes to 24 at the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly in Sri Lanka.
With the handover of the Federation flag to the Lord Mayor of Glasgow at the Closing Ceremony of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Glasgow officially became the Games host city and Commonwealth Games Scotland the host Commonwealth Games Association.
Commonwealth Games Scotland is one of three partners which form the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee along with Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government.
Commonwealth Games Scotland is not responsible for the delivery of the Games. This falls to the organising company Glasgow 2014 Limited, however its Board and staff members contribute to Glasgow 2014 at many points in its organisational structure.
As ever, Commonwealth Games Scotland’s primary role is to select, prepare and manage Scotland’s team to compete at the Games. Commonwealth Games Scotland recognises that a successful home Games will be measured by the success of the home team. To ensure success we need to continue to have the whole of the Scottish sporting system behind us, prioritising the Games.
Commonwealth Games Scotland is committed to working with partners to ensure Team Scotland competes with distinction in Glasgow 2014 and has its most successful Games ever.
As part of the Scottish Government’s 2014 Legacy plan, Commonwealth Games Scotland will also work with partners to ensure improved high performance sport structures are funded and embedded within the governing bodies of Commonwealth Games sports, to raise performance standards for the long-term.
