An endangered bird will fly the flag for the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The south eastern red-tailed black cockatoo, is native to western Victoria and there are fewer than 1000 remaining. Prime Minister John Howard was given the honour of introducing Karak, named for the cockatoo's distinctive call and he highlighted its communal nature. The bird was chosen because it is uniquely Australian and welcoming to all. The male is slate black with a red tail band and although the Opening Ceremony is over 700 days away, fluffy Karaks are expected to be in the shops by the end of the year.

Melbourne's mascot follows in the paw prints of Matilda, the winking kangaroo from the Brisbane Games in 1982 and Olly the kookaburra, Syd the platypus and Millie the echidna from the Sydney Olympics four years ago.
