What is the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland?

The Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland is the national sporting organisation charged with entering a Scottish Team in the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games every 2 years along with 71 other Commonwealth countries, territories and dependencies.

The Commonwealth Games is the only multi-sport event in which Scotland competes as Scotland.

Membership of the Games Council consists of representatives of 26 sports in the Commonwealth Games programme from which the host city selects up to 17 sports for each Games.

The Council elects an Board of Directors who hold office for 4 years and is staffed by a full-time Chief Executive Officer and a full-time Office Manager.

Scotland has competed in every Games since the first Empire Games in 1930 and has hosted the Games twice in Edinburgh 1970 and 1986. The Commonwealth Youth Games were also inaugurated in Edinburgh in 2000. Glasgow will be host  city in 2014 when the Games return to Scotland for a third time.

Each Games Team is managed by a volunteer staff appointed by the Games Council which is supported by the office staff and contracted professional support in the media and public relations.

The Games Council's responsibilities are to select, prepare, outfit and transport the Team for each Games.

The Games Council receives core operational support funding from the Scottish Government via sportscotland. Participation in each Games is dependent on sponsorship and through fundraising events and dinners, and the generosity of the Scottish business sector and public through donations. Without this support Scotland would not be able to participate in the Games.
