Melbourne 2006 Team Selection Opens

With just over 430 days to go until the 2006 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in Melbourne, the qualifying period for team selection is now open for Scotland's athletes. Between now and 16 September those athletes who have reached the qualifying standards set down by their sports Govering Bodies and agreed by the Commonwealth Games Council will be eligible for selection to the Games Team.

Scotland will be aiming for represention in 15 sports in 2006 - Acquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Rugby 7's, Shooting, Squash, Table Tennis, Triathlon and Weightlifting. EAD events will be held in Athletics, Powerlifting, Swimming, and Table Tennis. The final breakdown of the EAD events will be known in April.

The staging of the Games in March poses a challenge to our athletes. Firstly they have to reach the agreed selection standards in the nine month period and then, if nominated for the team, they and their coaches will have to gear their training schedules to compete during a time which for a number of them would normally be out of season.

At the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bendigo last November Scotland's young athletes were no strangers to the podium and it is hoped that their success will be repeated next March.
