Athletics Selection Standards

26th May 2004

SCOTTISHATHLETICS AND THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES COUNCIL FOR SCOTLAND (CGCS) today (Wednesday) outlined their selection policy for the Scottish team for the Commonwealth Games due to be held in Melbourne, Australia from 15-21 March 2006.

Included in the policy are the standards which must be met between 1st January 2005 and 4th September 2005 to secure selection. The overall standards from the last three Commonwealth Games in Manchester (2002), Kuala Lumpur (1998) and Victoria (1994) have been used as guidelines in shaping the policy.

The CGCS has set an overall policy which individual sports are required to adhere to. The standards set require as a minimum, that any Scot be good enough to finish in the top 8 or a top half placing in the anticipated field, whichever is the tighter standard.

Chris Robison, Performance Manager, scottishathletics said: “Working alongside our colleagues at the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland we have produced what we believe to be a demanding but fair set of selection standards for the 2006 Games.

“In some events, the standard is a lot tougher than what it has been in the past, this is reflection of the high standard of performance that exists within the Commonwealth. As other countries raise their game, so must we if we are to compete at that level.

“The standards mean that the athletes who strive to and eventually succeed in making the team will be able to go to Melbourne with high hopes of some great results. There has been significant funding to our performance athletes in recent years and appropriate support structures are now in place.

“The time has now come for those investments to begin bearing fruit. We believe that Scottish athletes should be aiming high, these standards ensure that will be the case.”

Louise Martin, Chairman, Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland said: “We acknowledge that these are tough standards, but they reflect what our athletes will need to do to reach a minimum of a top eight finish or top half of the field placing in Melbourne.

“By publishing the standards at this early stage we are giving athletes and coaches a clear target to aim for and we are confident that they can rise to the challenge.”
