| 166 SCOTS TO HEAD DOWN UNDER FOR COMMONWEALTH
GAMES
The Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland (CGCS) announced today the
166 athletes (104 men and 62 women) selected for the Scottish Team to
compete at the XVIII Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia next year
(15-26 March). The team size, which is 27 smaller than in Manchester,
very much reflects the tightening of selection standards to top eight
in the Commonwealth and arguably makes the team the strongest ever sent
‘down under’ to a Commonwealth Games in terms of strength
in depth.
Included in the line-up are Olympic and World Champions and no less than
20 former Commonwealth Games medallists, including Chris Hoy and Steve
Frew, both gold medallists in Manchester. They will all be hoping to repeat
their medal winning performances, although a Games in Australia will present
a significant challenge, being out of season for many sports.
Shooter Ian Marsden will be making his sixth Games appearance, whilst
Steve Frew will be making his fifth, which is an incredible feat for a
gymnast. Also included are 12 competitors who have successfully made the
transition from the Commonwealth Youth Games Team which was so successful
last year in Bendigo, Australia winning a total of 52 medals. Basketball
is the only new addition to the Games programme and the Scottish men’s
basketball team are excited about the prospect of making their debut in
Melbourne.
The selection policy published some 18 months ago set standards aimed
at individual athletes and teams making the top eight. There was also
a commitment made that those achieving the standards set would go to the
Games regardless of overall team numbers and this has been realised.
Commenting, Louise Martin, Chairman, CGCS, said: “Our selection
process has been tough, but rigorous and robust throughout. I would like
to thank the participating governing bodies of sport, which have worked
closely with us to ensure that it has been successfully and fairly implemented.
Our athletes have risen to the first challenge, that of making the team.
Now will come the real test, performing in Melbourne.
“We have selected the best team possible. We said that if you could
clearly show you could meet the criteria, you would go regardless of overall
numbers and cost. We have kept our word.
“In helping to make these selections based on sporting reasons rather
than finance I would like to thank our sponsors, and major supporters
in particular, Clydesdale Bank, Emirates Airlines and sportscotland for
their unstinting support with our planning and preparations. The Commonwealth
Games Endowment fund established by the First Minister after the last
Games has also been a major factor in helping to relieve the financial
pressures.”
There are just over four months left for athletes to hone their preparations
ready to deliver their best performances in Melbourne. Commenting on the
Team’s chances, Paul Bush, Chef de Mission, said: “With the
selection hurdle now out of the way, athletes can focus on getting themselves
in the best possible shape to perform well next March. Melbourne will
be a huge challenge for the team, particularly on the back of such a successful
Games in Manchester and without our medal winning judo squad. However,
we have some experienced athletes in the team who I am sure will rise
to the challenge and spur others to follow them on to success, all backed
up by an excellent support staff.”
The athletes will be supported by a support staff totalling 70, comprising
team management, coaches, medical and sports science support, including
doctors, physiotherapists, psychologists, physiologists and video analysts.
David Thorburn, Clydesdale Bank’s Chief Operating Officer, said:
"Clydesdale is proud to be an official partner to the 2006 Scottish
Commonwealth Games Team. With today's team announcement we are about to
embark on the final chapter of what is an exciting journey for Clydesdale
Bank, the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland and of course, the athletes.
Everyone at the bank is 100% behind the whole team, and we hope our input
will help them all do their very best in Melbourne."
The main team departure will be on 28 February 2006 from Glasgow Airport
flying with Emirates Airlines, one of the team’s main sponsors.
Vic Sheppard, Emirates Vice President for the UK and Ireland, said: "We
are delighted to support the Scottish Commonwealth Games Team as Official
Airline and Team Sponsor. We will do everything we can to ensure that
the Team benefits from our expertise in helping long-haul passengers arrive
at their destinations in the greatest possible comfort. We look forward
to tracking the team's progress whilst they are in Melbourne and wish
them the best of luck.”
