Youth Games Day 1 Results

Scotland's Commonwealth Youth Games Team have had a fantastic first day of competition in Bendigo, Australia, winning a grand total of 10 medals.

Scotland's swimmers won 2 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze with a further bronze being added to the medal table from the Women's 58kg Weightlifting competition.

Swimming

Lorna Smith (Paisley) won gold in the Women's 100m Backstroke event in a time of 1:04.73, with fellow Scot, Gemma Sutherland (Aberdeen) winning the bronze in a time of 1:05.48. In the men's event, Scott Houston (Dalry) narrowly missed out on a bronze with a time of 59.75, just behind John Zulch of New Zealand who won the bronze in 59.73.

Mark Branch (Irvine) brought home gold in the Men's 200m Breaststroke with a time of 2:20.32, with team mate Lewis Smith (Edinburgh) coming in sixth. Kerry Buchan (Banchory) won silver in the women's event in a time of 2:35.14 with Rebecca Hillis (Neilston) coming in fourth.

In the Women's 400m Individual Medley, Hannah Miley (Inverurie) won silver in a time of 4:59.18 with Lewis Smith (Edinburgh) also winning silver in the men's event, in a time of 4:36.91.

In the Men's 200m Freestyle, Andrew Hunter (Berkhamstead, Scottish father) won bronze, with a time of 1:53.80.

Scotland's Freestyle Relay Teams were also celebrating success, with Lorna Smith, Hannah Miley, Gemma Sutherland and Jenni Kilgallon (Dundee) winning bronze in the Women's 4x100m Freestyle Relay, in a time of 3:58.63 and the Men's 4x100m Freestyle Relay team, Robbie Renwick (Aberdeen), Malcolm Kerr (Edinburgh), Scott Houston and Andrew Hunter, following suit by also winning bronze in a time of 3:36.56.

Commenting on the team's performance, Eileen Adams, Swimming Team
Manager/Coach said: "We are delighted with the results which have given a great boost to the Scottish team. For may of our swimmers this is their first taste of outdoor swimming and although the conditions were far from perfect, the swimmers performed outstandingly."

Badminton

Scotland were beaten by Malaysia 4-1 in the first round of the badminton event, with the one win from the mixed doubles team, Watson Briggs
(Renfrew) & Imogen Bankier (Milngavie), 15-12, 11-15, 12-15.

Bowls

After beating Samoa 21-4 in the first round of the Girls Singles competition, Michelle Cooper (Kilwinning) went on to beat Northern Ireland 21-15 in the second round and currently stands in second place behind Malaysia.

Martyn Rice (Dumfries) won his first round in the Men's Singles
competition, beating Samoa 21-13, but lost to New Zealand 21-8 in the second round, leaving him standing in fifth position overall.

The mixed pairs team, Mandy O'Donnell (Edinburgh) and Marc McGraw
(Hamilton) won their round against Northern Ireland 16-14 and are currently fourth in the standings.

Boxing

Jason Hastie (Edinburgh) beat Tusiga Taala of Samoa in the first round of the 54kg boxing event and moves on to the next round, with team mate Joseph Kelso (Muirkirk) also moving to the next round, after beating Thamanqa Dubase of South Africa in the 57kg category. Both won by the 20 point rule. Andrew McKelvie (Dundee) and Gary McMillan (Edinburgh) also won their first matches.

Cycling

Catherine Niblock (Dumfries) failed to finish in the Women's Cross Country event after her chain broke during the race but despite this she is in good spirits and is ready to compete in the road race on a borrowed bike, as she had not originally intended to race in this event.

A solid performance saw Stuart McManus from Glasgow finishing tenth in the 10km scratch. In the same race a brave performance was given from 16 year old Kevin Barclay (Glenrothes). In a noticeably stronger and more
physically developed field, Kevin came in nineteenth. "It was an experience that will stand him in good stead in the future" said Scotland's National Cycling Coach, Graeme Herd.

Shane Charlton (Cupar) finished seventh in the Men's Kilometre Time Trial.

Weightlifting

There were celebrations in the weightlifting camp as Jenna O'Neill
(Greenock) won bronze in the Women's 58kg class, while Graeme Kane
(Crosshouse) came in fourth in the Men's 69kg class, achieving two personal bests, 92.5kg in snatch and 117.5kg in the clean and jerk.
