Rice Has Commonwealth Goal
10 August 2004

Martyn Rice was bowled over with pride when he learned he was Athlete of the Month. And after landing the Commonwealth Gemes Council for Scotland award, held in association with the Army and the Daily Record, the Dumfries bowler has now set his sights on representing his country at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bendigo, Australia. And Rice knows what to expect if he does end up heading down Under.

the 17 year old said "The greens are much faster in Australia compared to Scotland, but at least I know the weather will be better. I would love to represent my country at ther Commonwealth Youth Games. I'm sure it would make my family very proud too".

Martyn has come a long way since starting out in the sport at the age of eight, playing with his father and grandfather.

The Dumfries Academy pupil already plays at senior level for his county and last year helped Scotland Under-25s win the Home Countries lawn bowls international. He devotes hours of practice to his sport and cites former world champion and countryman, Richard Corsie, as his inspiration.

Martyn added: "Winning the Home Countries was brilliant and I have got a trial for the Under-25s team coming up again soon. I'm desparate to make the squad again and help to retain the title".
