| 400m track ace Kris Robertson, twice a winner
of the Daily Record Young Athlete of the Year award, has now been named
'Young Scottish Athlete of the Month' by the Commonwealth Games Council
for Scotland in association with the Army in Scotland and Daily Record. The 17-year old flying Scot, who only started training for the 400m event three years ago, has been quick to show his track competitors a clean pair of heels. At the 2004 AAA championships in England, the Bishopbriggs teenager set a new championship and Scottish 400m age-group record of 47.08 seconds. Smashing the previous best of 47.71 seconds, his blistering performance made Robertson the third fastest UK athlete in history for his age over the distance. The Kirkintilloch Olympians athlete now aims to continue his winning form when he competes for Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Australia in November. "I want to run under 47 seconds out there. Hopefully, I'll make the (400m) final but we'll see what happens on the day." However, his father and coach, Sandy Robertson, has no doubt of his son's potential. "If all continues to go according to plan, he could be an Olympic champion." Whatever the future achievements that await the modest runner, Robertson revealed two of the inspirations behind his recent 400m performances. "Lance Armstrong (multiple Tour de France winner) shows what you can achieve with hard training. I also listen to Keane. Their music's really motivating and it always helps me relax before a race." Article by Colin Hutchison from the Daily Record of 22 September 2004 Kris will receive a training grant of £200 as the Army sponsored "Young Athlete of the Month" for the month of August.
