Successful sportsmen and women have several things in common. As well as talent and a willingness to undertake a lot of hard work, more specifically they all have a dream, along with a burning desire and determination to succeed.

The Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland (CGCS) worked with over 200 of Scotland's top athletes across a range of 16 sports, helping them to achieve their dream of representing Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. However we could not do this alone, as it required in excess of £450,000 to professionally prepare the team for this event, all of which needed to be generated through sponsorship, donations and fundraising events.

We invited the whole of Scotland to support the Bank of Scotland Scottish Team by taking part in Commonwealth 200+2.

What did it involve?

`Commonwealth 200+2' was an awareness and fundraising campaign aimed at schools, clubs, businesses and individuals, whatever their age, interest or ability, encouraging them to take part in a sponsored activity or event with a sporting or Commonwealth theme involving the number 202 in some way. For example:

·         one person running 202 metres or 202 people running one lap each

·         attempting 202 different sporting activities as a school or club

·         forming a relay team to swim 202 lengths

·         playing badminton to 202 points

·         scoring 202 goals in hockey, football or netball

·         a mass aerobics session with 202 participants

·         cycling 202 miles on the road or on an exercise bike

·         involving 202 people in sport for the first time

The list of ideas was endless.  Including ideas for “non-sporty” people, who were encouraged to help by reading 202 books, painting 202 pictures or reading 202 poems, perhaps with either a sporting or Commonwealth theme. Anything involving 200+2 really!

What happened?

Schools, clubs, companies, individuals, etc all took up the offer and helped raise over £30,000 for the Bank of Scotland Scottish Team 2002.  Many activities were attended by our Scottish athletes, who joined in the fun and were able to speak to participants, in particular children about the Games. Hopefully, meeting the Team and seeing them compete will inspire them to be our competitors of tomorrow and take part in and enjoy sport in the future.

We would like to thank each and everyone who got involved in a Commonwealth 200+2 activity, without all your support our Team would not have been as successful.  Amongst the outstanding efforts were -

Bankhead Primary School,  Glasgow

In 1998, Bankhead Primary seized the opportunity to help the team and managed to raise over £2,000 for the Games in Kuala Lumpur.  Their enthusiasm and support was evident again in 2002, with efforts raising well in excess of £3,000.  Thank you to Mrs Tysen, the pupils and staff of Bankhead for organising their activity, which was as simple as a sports circuits with "games" activities.

Allan Alstead - Chef de Mission, Scottish Team 2002

Allan ran over 250 miles back in 1998 to raise funds for the Scottish Commonwealth Games Team raising over £7,700 for the Team.  In 2002, he once again decided to repeat this magnificent effort of personal fundraising for the Scottish Team 2002. During his effort Allan ran over 280 miles, clocking them up on a 6.1 mile circuit over 3 months prior to the Games.  For his efforts Allan raised in excess of £6,500 with money still coming in for the fundraising campaign.

ASDA Stores Scotland

Games sponsor ASDA showed their support of the Scottish Team by organising fundraising events in stores throughout Scotland.  Supported by Team members, staff and customers raised over £17,000 for the Team effort.
